    M33 dagger help

    Hi dagger guys,

Could someone please tell what type(s) of M33 pattern dagger with an SA logo in the hilt may have been produced with a GILT eagle )probably fire-gilt at that, definitely not lacquer imo). Image attached. Responses appreciated.

Hi: It looks like a silver-plated copper eagle. I've seen this on a '36 Chained SS dagger. Hope this helps!

      Hi,

I should have added that the eagle is nickel silver. Look to the left of the swastika on the wreath where the detail has been worn away, definitely a silver coloured base-metal.

Hi: I'm not aware of any SS dagger w/gilted eagle. However, if the upper grip enblem is an SA rune then it could be a Marine SA.

Is it possible that the "gold" color on the grip eagle is nicotine patina? I've had several SA/SS types with this. A Marine SA would be great too. Not too many of them and they always command a premium

Marines had the fittings gilted, NOT the eagles.

who know what was put on this grip. can we see the rest

              Hi,

The gilt finish has a metallic component and produces the same response in sunlight that fire-gilded badges do.

              Additional images attached.

                Mike,

Are you sure the eagle is gilted? The reason I ask is that I have a chained SS dagger with a grip eagle that has even more of the gold toning than the one you have pictured. (If I could ever figure out how to post photos to the forum, I could put up a picture to illustrate my point)

The toning is most likely a combination of nicotine, dirt, and Father Time, as I'm sure the eagle on my dagger was not produced with a gilted grip eagle.

                  Hi Mike,

Here's a scan of the grip eagle on one of my '36 SS daggers. The gold color is definitely not the result of gilting, but 60 years of grime, sweat, and God knows what.

                  Happy 4th!

                    Just a question

To better help me in my pursuits- is the scabbard black or is it the picture. And if the scabbard is black would't this make it an NSKK dagger?

                      Chuck,

The scabbard is indeed black. The grip also appears to be black, but with an SA grip insignia, which would actually make Mike's dagger a Marine SA. The photo I posted is of an SS dagger grip.

Hope that helps clear things up!

                        grip

I thought the handle of Mike's dagger looked brown. If it was black it has worn a great deal. Not that I've seen a lot of these close up. They are getting extremely scarce in my opinion. Chuck
