Not much to add after what Billy says, that Gary is the 'To-Go-To-Guy' on Hirschfangers, except I concur that it is a 'Atwood Fake'. One of the best that came out IMO.
              >>I seriously doubt it's an Atwood piece since I bought five other original items from the same person; however, my ears are open if anyone thinks this is a postwar piece. <<

This one also looks brass based to me.
It also has the "Atwood etch" which actually gave a slightly wider 'edge border' but that actually cut off the snout tips of the Elk as evident in your example.

If you should ever compare this 'Atwood' example to a authentic one you will note the the repro looks and feels better then a 'period original.
Here is a comparison of two 'swastika ferrules' by Holler. First one like your example (Atwood) The second a period original.

              Hope this helps you.

I really do suspect that it is an Atwood piece, the two pictures that Serge posted clearly shows how good the eagle and swastika is in your piece, generally they are very crude in this area as shown in the other picture that Serge shows. The non magnetic fittings is pretty conclusive regarding these pieces. The Vet could easily have picked this piece up in the 1950's, hence the grandson not knowing what he had.

Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news.

                Regards

                Gary

Thanks Gary and everyone else. I have been doing hotel buys for the past three months and this is one of the items that came in. It is not the first time I bought a good fake from the son or grandson of a veteran. I have learned to be more cautious - just because a vet's son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter say their father/grandfather brought it back, doesn't necesarily make it so. Fortunately I didn't pay a lot for this dagger. Thanks again for everyone's help.

I have read and heard the stories of Atwood's creations but thought he used left over stocks of parts from the period?,or at least the same dies or molds? Did he have the Solingen makers left after the war create all new parts (re-create the molds slightly different?). Seems expensive! Kevin.

I almost bought one of these from a WAF advertiser. When it arrived it matched the Atwood reproduction, and I returned it. Thank goodness for WAF as a resource!
