    Dagger portepee question

    Hello,
I have had this portepee for some time and wondered what branch it was for.
The fleck through the silver is a sort of rusty orange/brown colour.
I also wondered if it is 100% original. It seems pretty much to the same construction
as other portepees I have on several daggers, but this item I picked up with some other items, in a box.
    all opinions welcome.

    regards John

Looks like a portpee for a Postschutz dagger. Have you blacklighted it?

        Hi Billy G
Thank you for the information, I will black light it tommorow, at a friends, as my own one is broken.
Can you tell me how much one of these portepees are worth please, as I do not intend keeping it.
I realise it is not so common.

        regards John

I would say originals of that knot are not cheap by any means. I apologize but I'm not up on the value of such an item although I should be since I have a very nice Postschutz dagger that's naked without the knot There are some very good postwar reproductions of this knot so I'd say the blacklight test itself would not be completely dispositive although it might help.

Your stripes looking more black to me.

Hi Ernst, must be the lighting/ exposure on the shot. The colour is definately orange.

                regards John

Postschutz original portapees are very rare.
Billy is of course correct, there are some very good repros out there.
Better than the two shown here. (JMO of course)

On original portapees and on the good fakes you will find the slide and stem also marked with orange wool thread.
On originals - the cord is the same thickness as a Army portapee. If you have one with a fatter cord - that's a typical sign of a repro.

Hi Wags, thanks you for the input. Well, I have borrowed a UV tester and there is nothing glowing. Its all dull underneath the black light. I have sent off pictures to a well respected dealer in the US for his opinion. I will keep you posted.

                    cheers John
