    K98 Seitengewehr

    Hey!

I recently bought this Seitengewehr for a decent price from Klaus Butschek.
The leather is a bit dry, but with a bit of Balistol it gets more moist.

It ain't got any stamps or brands or what so ever.
except on the top side of the scabbard. (around the opening surface)
    It say's 5575.

There are some rusty spots. On the release catch mainly. The portepee wasn't on the frog, but I added it later on. The red felt piece is precent, but with a few moth holes.

    Any comments are apreciated!

    Kind Regards,
    Dougie

            Nice

Very nice, very early production dress bayonet. One thing I really like about these is that the bayonets are much heavier than their later counterparts. The base is clearly iron. The plating is also of a superior quality to many of the later pot-metal plated pieces, especially those towards the end of production.

My summary: a nice and early dress bayonet, probably from the NS era and one to be proud of. Congrats.

              Hey Jan!
              Thank you for your reply
I'm realy happy with this one. I think it's a nice adition to the collection for a decent price.
(When you say 'NS era', I assume you mean the 'National Socialist era'?)
I'm not that fermiliar with the abbreviations

I prefer the early-war stuff. They are made with much more care and better ground materials. (But more expensive as well)

Anyway, thank you for your reply!

                Hi Dougie,

by NS, I did indeed mean National Socialism Era. I am no expert at dating these pieces, but judging by the fact it has two rivets instead of 3 often seen with Imperial pieces, it would be in the 30s. I have a few of these early pieces as well in my collection and they really are impressive indeed. The rusty spots do not harm the look of it. In fact, to me they do quite the opposite and are not uncommon.

An very common Extra-Seitengewehr, showing the, so called, "Karabiner-Klinge", ("carbine blade").
The condition isn´t that good, so, the value should´nt be that high ...

BTW, this is not a portepee, it´s an NCO´s "Troddel" !

                    Hey Reibert,

Thanks for letting me notice! The condition isn't that good indeed, but, it could be WAY more worse I guess!!

And talking about value, I don't realy care. As long as I like it. I think it has character. Just as Jan sed!
