    HJ Fire Dept Bayonet

Folks, I have had this HJ Fire Department bayonet in my collection for over 35 years. It was purchased at a garage sale from the vet who told me that he got it during WW2 in Germany. There is no maker mark on the blade and comes with a nice polished scabbard.

It is very interesting since it has the HJ emblem on the grip. The emblem does not wiggle. Has anyone ever encountered a Fire Deptament bayonet like this?

    Many thanks,
    Fred

      Ouch

Oh noooo! I hate to say it, but it's a made up piece. You are indeed correct that a fire bayonet was used as a base. The HJ insignia has been glued into place and the scabbard has been tampered with. Overall, original parts messed with and made to deceive a collector.

          Hi Fred,

I'm sorry to say I agree with Jan & Mike, this bayonet is a made up piece. The fire bayonet is certainly a period produced piece but the HJ emblem was clearly added post production. Note the glue residue around the lower corners & seemingly poor cut out for the emblem, things one would never see on a period piece.

There were HJ bayonets produced later in the 3R, purportedly for the HJ Gefolgschaft although these bayonets used a standard KS98 hilt rather than the Feuerwehr hilt. These bayonets are fairly rare & very often faked. I have seen a more modern fake similar to your HJ fire piece, they are currently being produced in China & have the HJ emblem on the reverse grip plate.

I am sorry to say that I have to add my name to the list of those that think that this has been postwar modified. FP
