A guy I get things from sometimes has a stag handled dress walking out bayonet with a knot which he says is police. The bayonet has the green felt -- Is the green felt police or Heer? the bayonet is $275 which sounds top to me.

I would pay $275 for a stag grip KS98 if it was nicely conditioned & maybe if I dug the maker. They sell for this price, more or less, on Eban all the time.
But what is supposed to distinguish this particular bayonet as being for the police? The green felt? From your description, the piece sounds like an ordinary KS98 bayonet with stag grip plates. The felt inserts, while possibly showing some affiliation, should not be your sole guide to which service the bayonet was for. These pieces are routinely sold on Eban & I'm sure plenty of collectors (dealers too?) swap them out. Just MHO but I think a lot may feel this way too.

Thanks for the info -- The guy said it had a police knot that had been on there for a long time but I wonder if he's mixed up and it's just a regular portepee.

Well a nicely toned Polizei knot that's been on a piece for a long time might help to convince a skeptic like me .
Years ago on Eban I bought a nice cut down Polizei bayonet years back because I wanted the SS NCO knot it had on it. Turned out the frog & knot were melded to the bayonet & had clearly been there for decades. Didn't have the heart to remove it & the whole rig remains as is in myu collection. But with todays items I suspect this is the exception as frogs & knots are readily popped off & sold piece by piece by dealers & collectors alike.
If it's still got the knot & it's nicely conditioned, it might be worth the asking price.
