    Third Reich Shooting Award bayonet by Weyersberg: Translation & Opinions Greatly App

    Hello ,

    I’m looking for some translation of the etching and maybe some history of this bayonet, if anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated. I was told it was a Third Reich Shooting Award Bayonet, my father who has since passed on, liberated it in WWII along other artifacts. I do not know how to upload the pictures of the bayonet, but have provided individual links to each photo below. Thank You again for any help or information you can provide.

      Yes that is a wonderful shooting prize dedication on a 'Presentation' Weyersberg model pattern bayonet.

      Let's see if I can contact a couple of our german experts on the translation and see what they say.

          Hello jdog and welcome to the forum.

          Thanks to my good friend wagner (he was so kind to inform me about your thread ) I would read the dedication on the bayonet as follows:

          Für Bestleistungen
          im Mess- und Richtdienst
          der Inf. Gesch. Komp. Konstanz
          im Jahre 1936

          Absolutely correct German, which I would translate into English as follows:

          For best performance
          in the duty of measuring and adjusting
          of the infantry ordnance company
          in the year 1936

          Instead of "best performance" one could also say "best achievement".

          According to my knowledge the abbreviation "Inf. Gesch. Komp." stands for "Infanterie Geschütz Kompanie" (infantry ordnance company).

          The words "Mess- und Richtdienst" are somewhat hard to translate into english. The little hyphen behind "Mess" is a typical abbreviation in the German language, which shall shorten a sentence. Fully written out it would say "Messdienst und Richtdienst" (duty of measuring and duty of adjusting). In order to prevent the direct following repetition of the same nouns (dienst = duty) in one sentence and in order to shorten the sentence in German language it is common to replace the first noun "dienst" (duty) with a hyphen and just to write the noun "dienst" (duty) in the second directly following word.

          The words "Mess-" and "Richtdienst" are composed words from the verbs "messen" (to measure) and "richten" (to adjust) together with the noun "Dienst" (duty). Thus I would translate these words as "duty of measuring and adjusting (duty of straightening / aiming an ordnance). I would assume that the recipient of the bayonet was the one, who performed best in measuring and adjusting (aiming) of the ordnance (presumably mortars, trench mortars) of the entire infantry company.

          The city of Konstanz was a garrison town during WW1 & 2 and the 3rd battalion of the 14th infantery regiment of the region Baden was based there.

          Konstanz lies in the very South of Germany at the Lake of Constance and directly adjacent to the Swiss border. The city was not bombed by the allied forces during WW2. It is said that the inhabitants of Konstanz left all their lights in the houses and on the streets on at night at the end of the war, and thus led the allied forces into thinking that this area would already belong to the neutral country of Switzerland. Therefore the city was not damaged at all at the end of WW2.

            A very beautiful presentation bayonet, from what I can gather it was awarded for best achievement but I can't get the connotation with the rest of the text.

                My father was a Tank commander (Captain) in the Battle of the Bulge, how he came into possession of the bayonet, is beyond me. When I look at the map of where Ivbaust said the bayonet was awarded (Konstanz) and where the Battle of the Bulge took place, this is a huge distance between the two. The only thing I can think of is that specific infantry division was moved to the action within the parameters geographically of the Battle of the Bulge. Thoughts on this?
