Heer Items D Ring Instead Of A Clip

I have two items a Medical Waffenrock, and a leather Infantry Greatcoat. Instead of the usual clip to link the officers dagger they have a D ring. What did the owners use when wearing their daggers.

Does anyone have an example , of the device used.
