    WW1 German Sawback Bayonet?

    I just picked this piece up and wanted to ask if anyone could point me in the right direction. This is obviously a K-98 bayonet with a sawback. I know that the scabbard is a replacement piece and is WW2 German. However, i do not see any of the imperial hallmarks that i would expect to see on the pommel or spine of the blade of this piece. I have done some looking around, and i just cannot seem to find another blade like this out there for reference. Any opinions are welcome. The blade is Maker Marked GEPR. HELLER MARIENTHAL.             Looks like a very nice S 84/98 nA S.

            I believe these were adopted by the Imperial Army around 1905.

            Weimar period armorers routinely removed the old Imperial markings from the blades when they were in for refurbishment prior to re-issue as they no longer had meaning. In some cases Reichswehr armorers remarked the blades at the regimental level.

            This information, and a great deal more, can be found in George Wheeler's book "History of the German Bayonet 1919-1945". It's a great read and wonderful reference. I'm not sure if they are still available but you could inquire. George goes by the WAF name of SCHUPO. You may also benefit by having him review this thread in case I've erred in my comments.

                Stu is correct that this is an Imperial S84/98 sawback in a mis-matched WWII period scabbard. The original scabbard would have had a different throatpiece and a screw in the center of the obverse scabbard instead of on the side like the post 1927 scabbards.
