Very nice Herder army dagger, opinions please

    Hello,

I got this "Herder" army dagger today.

    The condition is very good!

    Is the dagger okay?

    Early or late Herder dagger?

    thanks.

It's original. It's not an early production. The fittings are nickel plated.

It is very unusual to have brass scabbard bands on a later vintage dagger.

If I remember from one I used to have in my collection, Herder scabbards had a single rear flush mounted screw.

Unless the dagger came straight out of the woodwork, I would suspect a scabbard switch, which always leads me to looking at other components for parts dagger.

I'd like to have a look at the dagger without the portepee so I could see the ferrule too. The pommel and crossguard do not match in patination which suggests that maybe they spent time on different daggers. I don't like the fact that the scabbard bands don't match the scabbard.

              Thanks Guys...

so the scabbard band do not belongs to the dagger?

This is possible because I didnĀ“t get the dagger from the family.
This one is from a collector.

IMHO the scabbard is from another maker, not Herder, quite possibly an Eickhorn. Herder, in my experience made daggers later in the period. I've never seen and early Herder. If someone has, well I'm here to learn too.
Ok, as far as the scabbard bands, I have no problems with brass bands being on a scabbard, seen it often. In my experience the very very earliest scabbards were brass based with brass bands, very shortly afterwards the brass bodies were replaced steel bodies with brass bands. later cheaper materials followed with the final production being steel scabbards with pot metal bands and no screws rather press on throats.
                  Hope that helps.
