    SS numbered dagger

    Hello all,

Most likely to be too good to be true but I thought I would ask. I know nothing of daggers as you guys know I spend my time in the medals/badges section of the forum. Anyhow, I have an opportunity to get this dagger fairly cheap. These are the only pictures I have at the moment but before I request more I would like to know if this one has any chance at being original. Please let me know either way. Thank you in advance and all opinions are welcome.

              Hi:

Good news. SS Number 59 108 was assigned to SS-Untersturmführer Josef Castellan, d.o.b. 16.11.1904, NSDAP membership no. 1 322 689. He turns up in the SS-Dienstalterlistes in the years 1936-1938. Reporting from the Show of Shows....

Exactly how "cheap" is cheap? The condition is pretty rough, and serialized daggers in very good condition can be found for only $3000 - $5000 on the average (depending on who you buy them from of course) although they will bring considerably more if they can be ID'd to a well known personality or someone with a extensive and well documented career. The handle has taken quite a beating with the swaz on the eagle obviously removed (and rather poorly) and the SS button looks like it may have been removed and replaced. The stamped SS number looks consistent with known originals... based on these pictures I'd say that everything appears to be original. Definitely ask for pictures of both sides of the blade before committing to anything.

I'd imagine that there is at least some information available in NARA on Castellan and I'm sure Ross or John P. Moore would be more than willing to help you research his name further.

Definitely ask for more pictures and get some detailed shots of both sides of the blade, as well as the maker mark.

                  Rob

I wouldn't let the number itself sell this dagger, as you mentioned the condition is rough & that grip & ground grip emblem are real killers IMHO.

                        Hello again,

What would the resale value of the dagger be, roughly?

Scabbard looks like it might some traces of paint too. I would love to see the blade.

the dagger has some issues and we really need to see the blade as that is where the real value is at " why did the seller not include a blade photo ? " ! if the blade is ok i could live with it , stick a real nice and salty vert hanger rig on it and get it researched

No problems with originality here, but the handle condition... I don't know what hurts my eye more, missing parts of the grip or "deactivated" eagle. Well, all depends on the blade, if it's nice and the dagger is FAIRLY priced, you can buy it, but still, most attractive thing about it is an identified ownership.
