    SA Dagger 'Fritz Barthelmess'

    Hi folks,

I would like to post a second SA Dagger out of my collection.

Early period and untuched SA dagger by "Fritz Barthelmess, Muggendorf", with nickel-silver fittings and a rarity of 6/10 (abt. 7000 produced pcs.).

The lower crossguard is marked "Fr" (Franken), silver grip eagle and SA are properly inset. The grip itself shows some of the rare Tiger-Strips.

Bright blade has deeply etched motto, shows beautiful cross-graining and minor runner marks, but no pitting or nicks to cutting edges. The marker mark is original black and beautiful visible.

The scabbard is dent-free showing only light specks and the normal surface wear as a matter of the age. There is only a tiny depression to the underside of the lower ball.

    Comments are welcome!

This may be a dumb question but since this maker was in Germany shouldn't the trade mark say 'Bayern" rather then "Bavaria" which is English?

                            Hi Paul,

this is not a dumb question.

"BAVARIA" is only the Latin word for Bayern. And the "Bavaria" is the female symbol for Bayern.

You can "google" for: Bavaria / Theresienwiese

                            Best regards,

                            Ernst K.

Latin name of Bayern - BAVARIA is not meant to say "Made in Bavaria". It's a brand name of a factory owned by Fritz Barthelmess and located in Muggendorf.
Tha vast majority of III Reich edged weapons maker marks consist of 2 or 3 elements which are: Owner's name (here Fritz Barthelmess), brand name (here BAVARIA), logo - image of animal, anchor, tree etc. and location - name of the city (here Muggendorf) sometimes accompanied by name of the city area or province.

Very nice dagger, I know people who collect mostly non-Solingen made SA daggers.
