Indeed, that is a very strange chicken like eagle above M naval marking. I would be very cautious of this sword.

Yep. Totally concur with George. That's what struck me. Caution is an understatement. Is it possible it's a period piece with embellishments? Yes it, is possible. I would excercise additional care with this one. I'm honestly not too hot on the casting of the hilt parts either.

              Hello,

If memory serves me it looks very much like a British 1827 Pattern Naval Officer Sword. Generally utilized by all ranks below those of flag rank. I will check further when time permits but maybe you could Google it and see. Possibly in that era an officer could purchase any sword he wished and then have it marked for his own branch of service.

              Regards,
              Stu

                Hello OnyX,

Were you able to examine this piece in hand? Research it a bit further?

I managed to locate and examine a British 1827 Pattern Naval Officer sword in hand and find it remarkably similar to the one you show.

Can you update this thread with your findings or decision?

                Regards,
                Stu

Things are much worse than any of you imagine... Since the Royal Navy has been considered THE premier sea service of the entire world ever since the time of Nelson ( and earlier ), its fashions have been copied by every country having a navy! Virtually all naval uniforms are more or less direct copies of the British; as are all the "accessories" like swords and dirks. This could EASILY be from Colombia, Egypt, Denmark, etc. etc. based soley on style. The blade etching usually contains the clues to its national origin, far better than style of hilt, blade, or scabbard mounts. Is there any left showing? In ANY case, I STRONGLY advise you avoid this at all costs if what you really want is a Kriegsmarine or even Imperial German sword. Though this was very likely MADE in Solingen, it could just as likely been made for anyone! ( Even the short-lived Confederacy copied this style offically for their naval officers, substituting a dolphin head for the lion; I believe surviving examples were all English-made and marked. )

I agree with many others here having owned a handfull of Naval swords. I say this is a humped up and aged Repro !

I disagree - I believe based on its overall appearance and apparant quality of construction to be "real"; but real WHAT? ( Likely neither British or German used - British or Solingen MANUFACTURED, maybe! ) Too many of the details look "right" for most modern repros; I'll stand by my original post.

The blade geometry with that mid-rib spine is austrian to me. Just saw one in a great collection with austrian imperial markings. Is the blade damascened or plain steel?

For a similar blade and scabbard style see here (after registration)

This is a 1851 style austrian sabel, maybe the one you have is a newer version.

Well... the bottom line is that this sword is not right. I would not touch it with a ten foot pole.
