    My Dress Bayonet- Unmarked

    Hi everyone,

I have had this Dress Bayonet for a while, but just got around to putting pics up. It has no marks what so ever. What do you guys think of it? The leather thing is still in place.

    Opinions appreciated!

    Hi

It's an Imperial Dress Bayonet, not TR in very nice condition and the only thing I am not entirely sure about is the blade, which I would attribute to a later piece in my opinion. I am sure others will have more to say about that.

Hmm, I'm interested in this too. I recently came across a bayonet exactly like this one. I passed on it, thinking it didn't seem quite right. However, I'm all for learning something new.

Is this bayonet completely authentic? The once I came across was in nicer condition, though the quality of construction wasn't as high as I've typically seen. I chalked it up to being an older reproduction.

Have these dress bayonets been reproduced/faked in the past?

IMO original bayonet, I saw that kind a blade before.

This is a standard KS98 style of blade for the short bayonet (20cm blade) for NCOs. The grip is an earlier style but the bayonet appears original from what I can see. BTW, they have extensively reproduced the KS98 in the past but this is not one of the repops IMHO.

Okay, but how do you tell if it's a reproduction. The lower quality construction, coupled with the unmarked blade led me to pass on a similar bayonet to the one pictured here.

Lots of KS98 style Extrawaffen had unmarked blades so that it no indication. Look carefully at the hilt and see if it is well finished before plating. See if the grip panels fit properly. If it looks brand new it probably is. If it has an etched blade with sexy units such as paratrooper or W-SS it has a high probability of being a fake.

There is no problem with passing on a poorly made original... the problem comes when you buy a fake as an original.

Many of the high end etched reproductions are coming out of the former Eastern Bloc, many with rare Pack & Eickhorn etches. The fakers caught on & started using similarly marked blades to go with that maker's etch patterns. Very often in order to avoid detection, the use period bayonets which makes finding bad ones a little more difficult but not impossible.

With some of the newer plain blade reproductions, the fakers have made completely new production & not period parts. Sometimes you can check the hilt to see if there is a casting line. I have never seen such a line (or flaw, if you will) on an original 3R period bayonet.
