    KM dagger knot/portepee

Hi gents, can any one give me some advice on haw to spot a real km dagger knot and some pointers to whatch out for?
    thank you spnner

In general an original portepee is tight woven. KM's could be made from silvered thread which patinated black by time, or aluminium. Late examples from nylon.

On most reproductions the fabric underneath the threads on the acorn glows under black light. Just don't get mean to the threads on an original knot trying to check this.

KM knots are 43cm, those for the Luft. daggers are 23cm. It's not difficult to tell the difference between the two even without a ruler.

                Hi guys,

Would not a true KM dagger portepee also have the circular fabric pattern at the end of the ball as opposed to the flat sheet type found in the Heer and Luftwaffe examples?

Further to my last...here is what I meant by the circular pattern.

What Tom Wittmann referrs to as the "cat's anus" portepee is more often associated with Kriegs daggers, but it is certainly not unique to them.

                            Hello,

It appears authentic to me. The reproduction ones I've seen and handled all were more loosely constructed. Yours appears to have a tight weave.

                              Agreed...the portepee looks original

As for my advice on tying it on your dagger - be sure you have a lot of time and a lot to driink. The correct tie is very difficult to effect.
