Original or repo German Sword

Hello.I am a new member but a long time collector of militaria. I used to have a nice collection of WWII German items but my interests changed years ago.

I have a chance to pick up a German sword from a lady for $350.00 but edged weapons are totally out of my realm of knowledge. Could anyone tell if this one is original or not? The pictures are from the seller and if need be, I can make arrangements to take better pics myself. Any help would be most welcome.

The sword is marked EUF Horter MGEN in an oval according to the seller. She states she sees no other markings on it. The sword knot strape is held intact by a piece of tape in one spot

The sword is a good one, and in nice condition I think the price is very reasonable as well. I hope SwordFish will check this out, he is the expert and will be able to give you more info.

Thank you Wolfgang. I have already picked up some badges and medals from her and there were a few repos in the pile. Some picked up by her Grandfather during the war and some that her Father picked up as he was a collector also. With the handful of repos she had I was worried that the sword was not good also.

I will most likely post the EK1 and Air Sea Rescue badge soon in the proper forum as I have doubts on them also.

Post the air sea rescue badge for sure. If it is the one I think you are referring to, the chances of it being good are very slim indeed.

To the dagger or sword collector it's all in the blade.You need to make sure it has not been sharpend or the tip broken off.It is for sure an original sword at a good price.

Fritz- Thanks for the opinion on the sword. Is there a model that identifies this lions head? I have seen a 1700 and 1706 model that are close to it.

Wolfgang- The badge mentioned was posted on another German militaria forum last week. I posted 2 pics of the back w/clasp closed,one back w/clasp open and one front view. No markings. Is that the one you saw?

Dr Dolch- Blade has not been sharpened and tip is intact. It looks like it was unissued and very new which to me was a red flag. Blade is also unetched. I had a value figure of $600.00 in my mind if it was good. Was I in the ballpark? Many thanks for giving it the thumbs up. I just got off the phone with the lady and will be picking it up later tonight.

Well Gentlemen,I bought the sword last night and the seller knocked another $25.00 off the price without me even asking. Total was $325.00! Here are some pictures that I took. I need to practice on photographing swords. Some shots show glare from the flash and the kitchen overhead lights.

If anyone can give me some advice on posting pictures direct on the site, I would be grateful. The terms of use makes me believe only certain members can do that.

Congratulations on a very nice looking sword! I was lucky enough to buy a very similar E. Pack & Sohn leopard-head at a flea market this spring for a very similar price; though minus the knot and for some reason the carrying ring. ( Believe technically yours is also some other kind of cat than a lion, at least according to the manufacturers. ) I've since added a knot, which goes a long way to further dressing it up. If you're careful you might be able to salvage this one unless it's too far gone with dry rot. It might be able to be positioned in such a way that the breaks are covered by the wraps. My knot's sound but a lot of the individual wire threads are broken and/or frayed; by wrapping it reversed from the obvious way it was previously on a sword, a lot of those places were covered.
