    Early SA Erased Rohm 1933

    Hello Brothers,

I was wondering if any members on here could find a reason why my early m33 SA ground Rohm dagger does not have a gau mark. Why would this be? It has an Eichorn benchmark, 2, stamped on the crossgaurd. I have been told that some early SA daggers don't have them but is there a reason for this?
    Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

The popular theory is the non GAU stamped daggers were presentation pieces not designated for distribution to the Gau regions. Interestingly, most I've seen without Gau stampings were Eickhorn Rohms, but I guess they produced the most, so proportionately I suppose there would be more Eicks without the stamp.

      interesting point

Thanks Gary, that is a very interesting point! that would explain it. So would I be correct in saying it would not of been given to a serving SA man but to someone more important or retired? what do you think?

Do other members agree with this? Were they Gau stamped prior to going the the SA district or were they done at the SA Camp prior to issuing to the serving members? I had a theory that they were delivered to the SA district and the SA leaders would take theirs and not bother getting them stamped. They would only stamp the ones being issued to the men.

All opinions welcome as there must be other members like myself who own an SA dagger that is not Gau marked.

      Thanks

      Mike

I had a Carl Wusthof SA without a Gau number and the opinion seemed to be that they were a private purchase and therefore not issued or stamped locally.

          Madmikess,
Gary M. is very knowledgeable on daggers.
Over the years I rarely find anything that I disagree with him on.

My opinion is the same as Gary's.
These Non-Gau marked Rohm's were supposed to be Presentation Daggers.
According to certain authorities in the dagger world there were approx. 5% out of the total Rohm production that were "presentation" pieces.
The question of these Presentation daggers will be addressed in T.W's upcoming tome on the SA daggers.

Here is my "presentation" Eickhorn. It has never been apart. (Some guys in the past had said these type of Non-Gau's had post-war switched crossguards)

Just a small part of the fantastic thrill of the hobby as we dig through the rubble of time.
