Hi these early hjs were made from 1933-1936 the leather hanger looks genuine as does the scabbard but it might not be origional to your knife, could you tell me how many runners there are inside the scabbard & what is the maker of the knife? price £180-£225 max imo it all depends who wants at the time of sale which these days can be a bit trying !!.
          Regards Scott.

The maker is C.D. SCHAAFF, there is only one runner.

Great maker & the scabbard with 1 runner is period for your hj, later scabbards have 2 runners.......Cheers Scott.

Does it reduce the value much not having the leather spacer, are these spacers
hard to find, i believe the blade would clean up as it is untouched.
would the value be higher as it is a desireable maker.

It doesnt really reduce the value a great deal but is nice to have the origional buffer in place, you could make a buffer out of an old peice of leather with the proper thickness around 3mm if you wish cos they are impossible to find intact & yes the value can go up some for desirable makers logo such as yours.
                  Regards Scott.

Check with some of bigger name dealers on the net for a blade buffer. Johnson or Witty may have a few for sale. Agreed regarding value. It shouldn't make a huge difference, however it could potentially dissuade someone from purchasing it when a comprable knife from a comprable manufacturer is also available for purchase. I suspect with a little dilligence and shopping around, you should be able to locate an original replacement buffer. Post an add in the various forums "wanted" section and you may get a hit, and perhaps even someone with an extra would be kind enough to send one to you at no cost. Quite a few forums have free wanted sections so it couldn't hurt. I've located odd parts like Heer saber buffers and glass eyes before. There are also beat up, junks which can periodically located on the auction sites. If the price is right, you could purchase it for the buffer, then sell the remaining parts to folks who may need a single grip plate, or some obscure part. I've done it a number of times to find hard to locate parts like a small girth Heer saber celluloid grip. I was able to buy the junker, extract the grip, and sell off the ferrule, blade, backstrap, etc., and ended up nearly breaking even, mybe loosing $3 even after shipping. A replacement grip alone would have cost me nearly $90 and wouldn't neccessarily be the right size.

Nice HJ. Hopefully you can complete her with the buffer.

                        Tom
