    S98 Bayonet

Picked this up last night from a vets family, pretty nice one by Eickhorn, I like the GI personalization on the frog.

scabbard tip, the scabbard is nice and straight no drying and not loose at all completely intact.

Are these usually found without unit markings?

            Fritz,

Sometimes. If there are any markings at all, it's more likely a private purchase.I have a mint one by WKC.I would say that private purchase S98 are harder to find than marked ones.

                Hi Fritz,

Nice looking bayonet. I wouldn't say these are hard to find without unit markings. That's a different question than if it was an issued piece or a private purchase piece. A lot of issued pieces were not unit marked.

Does it have a date or any Imperial mark on the spine, or inspector marks anywhere, like on the hilt? If it has acceptance or proof marks on it it's likely it's an issued piece. If there's no government marks, then it's likely a private purchase piece. Is is plated? That would also indicate it's a private purchase.

Wow - timely discussion as I was just about to post my S98 for discussion. Mine is completely without any markings whatsoever on the handle or scabbard.

For what it's worth, George Wheeler, in his book Seitengewehr, says these S98s "do not appear to have been reissued by Weimar or Nazi armorers", so I assume one would not expect to find reissue markings on them.

No, no marking on the spine, the only marking on it is the mfg mark fro Eickhorn.
