    S.A. blade help

    Hi everybody,

I have had this blade for years. Nobody can tell me if it is right or wrong. Its not my subject. It is embossed in gold and the blade is tempered in black with a wavy line. Can anybody help.

I always tend to be wary of exotic blades, but I like the fact that this one has the proper marking on the tang and the look of the tang itself. That said, given the amount of money that could be at stake here, I would be reluctant to pass judgement on it either way without being able to examine it more closely. It would be worth a trip to a major show in order to compare it to a known original.

    Hope that helps!

      S.A. dagger

      Hi Skip,

Thanks for taking the time to reply and for your welcome comments.

I have shown this to some of the collectors in England but all I get is Ums and Ahs but never a positive answer. Most of them say they have never seen anything like it before.

      Thanks again.

      Best wishes
      David

One aspect of an original damascus blade is that the pattern should be clearly evident all the way to the end of the tang. While I can't tell for sure from your photo, I dont see the pattern on the tang. Sorry, but I would have to pass if it were offered to me.

            Gentlemen,
All that I would add to this is, Snigley is partially correct concerning his comments on the tang. What damascus I have seen and owned over the years did have SOME of the damascus pattern at the base of the tang - from there the smith forge-welded a plain steel tang on to complete the blade. I for one, without seeing this blade in person, like it. But, that is only my opinion.
            Regards,
            Dick
