SS 1196/38 My first SS Dagger

Well, hopefully the news comes back good, I think it will.....just picked it up today at a gunshow..... Chris....

Does anyone want to give me an idea as to a market value on this piece, it's real outside of what I collect, and to be honest it is the first SS Dagger I've ever handled (it's Alaska, no shows, and you don't see this stuff ofen)

Sorry for the poor pictures as well, it was snowing hard today, so couldn't photo outside.... I do have a 30 day return from the guy I bought it from, an older gentleman who had a few old copies of Johnson books to base a valuation upon.... Chris....

Hi Chris,
I hate to say this, but there's a few red flags on this one. Foremost, its clearly been apart as your blade is installed backward. That should automatically raise the question of a parts dagger. Please take a clear picture of where the blade meets the crossguard so we can look at the fit. If what I'm seeing from pic #6 is any indication of what we'll see, I'd suggest getting your money back. I'm hoping its just the picture though. The fit of the handle to the upper crossguard isn't great, but later daggers did not display the glove-like fit of the earlier production pieces. Looks like a very early copper based eagle from which the nickle wash has disappeared from. Can you provide a straight shot of the runic button for us?

Here's some more photos, also I see what you mean about the blade being oriented "backwards", obviously someone has had this apart at one point and didn't get things put back together correctly. But, it begs that question from me....what determines (if it can even be determined) what is a "parts" dagger, and what is a dagger that someone felt they had to take apart at one point and then ended up reassembling incorrectly?
Back in the day it was common for folks to tear apart helmets to clean them and switch out better liners. I have also bought several military weapons for bargain basement prices due to the fact that someone put a spring, etc. in backwards and couldn't get it to work properly again. One simple flip of a spring has brought back to life Arisakas and G-43's for me.... That said I'm still looking to get an idea of value before I decide if I'm going to return this or not. I can also get better pics in a few days in outdoors lighting if needed. Chris...
