I was thinking the same thing. It was probably done by the veteran who brought it home...My Himmler had a number engraved like that in about 5 places (crossguards, ricasso, scabbard fittings ) Fortunately I was able to have them removed without a trace

congratulations on your new piece.
I personally have done transactions with Paul Hogle and find him to be most trustworthy.
As for the 'engraving' I have heard horror stories about identification numbers etched all over such vet bring back pieces. I remember it was a craze in 1970's to etch your Social Security numbers on all valuables in the house . The local police had a program where they came to my parents house and did the etching themselves for my parents...even T.V.s
