Army dagger - etched damascus blade

    Hey guys,

Out of interest, is this the real deal?

    Jan,

That's not a damascus blade, it looks to be an etched blade but whether it's pre 1945 or not remains to be seen. I would be very careful buying one of these from someone unknown to you.

Poor photos, but I hold very little hope for it.

          Jan,

I looked again, my apologies. The piece does look to be engraved over damascus steel. Never seen anything like it. I looked quickly the first time.

I believe that this damast pattern is artificial and not genuine damaststahl.

If you look carefully, the pattern is the same on the bevels as it is on the center flat. When the shape of the blade changes on a genuine damascus example the pattern also changes as different layers in the damascus is exposed. Very similar to what happens when one carves wood.

From these pictures I believe this is a very shrewd attemt at some fakery.

A careful look at the tang would be revealing as would seeing the piece in hand.
