    Early Eickhorn Bayonet.

    Hi,
scored an early Eickhorn Dress Bayonet today. Sawback 84-98 type with excellent blade. Only flaw is handles appear to have been changed at one stage. They are held in by 3 rivets is this normal I have seen 3 rivits used before on grips. Scabbard is a repaint Anyhow here it is.
    cheers Robert

          Hi Robert,

I'mstill just a student on bayonets, but I believe there is no problem with three rivets on checkerd grips. If this one is an good one,you had a bargain at $200 IMO.
I amlooking forward on Schupo's reply on this one.

          Kind regards,Jeremy

With that early TM, three rivets are not uncommon plus the grip plates have weep holes. Very nice pick up, would look good in anyones collection.

              Robert,

The three rivets in the grips would not be out of line for a KS98 (this is not an S84/98) bayonet with this Eickhorn trademark. If the grips look to be replacements that is possible too, so look closely at the rivets to see if they have been disturbed or replaced.

One thing that strikes me is the large number of sawteeth. Can you post a closeup of the sawback? There are two ways to make a saw on these bayonets. Count the points on either side and you will have well over 30. Most long blades had 20-25 points per side. Some have only one distinct point while some will have a tall and a short point on each side. As these have been well faked over the years one should be cautious.

I saw a very well faked S98/05 sawback at SOS that had a new saw cut into an existing bayonet. Unfortunate, in that the rather decent S98/05 is now ruined.

Here is the only closeup of the teeth I have at present, I counted the teeth there is 34 or 35.
                cheers Robert

                  Sawbacks

                  Schupo,
are you saying they get original Bayonets and make the sawteeth. I have several Sawbacks I counted the teeth on a Demag Sawback and it came to 36. I also posted the Eickhorn on BCN so maybe someone there will check it over. These are the teeth on the Demag similar to the Eickhorn but the blade is slightly wider.

                      Sawback teeth

Should there be a certain number of teeth for certain bayonet types?. A sawback weighs as much as a regular bayonet I read if true a fake one would weigh less whats the weight for a KS98 Bayonet, Dress Type? Does this even make sense. Appears to be fakes everywhere. I am confident this one isnt a fake.
                      cheers robert

                        Robert,

The teeth on your S98/05 are properly made. Bear in mind that this blade is longer than the one on the KS98 and should have more teeth. Anthony Carter counts the teeth in his book on the models 98/02 and 98/05 and states there should be 29 on this bayonet but acknowledges other authors state the number fluxuates. I think your Demag S98/05 is perfectly OK.

The KS98 shown by Scott is what I would expect to see on a KS98 with a 25cm blade. The teeth have a tall and short point on each side and number 20 and not 36.

When you get the bayonet in hand examine it very carefully and compare it to your other sawbacks. People do fake these by cutting new teeth into the spine of original bayonets. Original teeth should look like they have been cut for awhile and show dings and discoloration. The outer edges of the teeth should be sharp and not curve in toward the middle. If they do, they were probably cut from a rounded back blade and are fake. The teeth on your KS98 do not appear to be plated like the rest of the blade and this makes me think they were cut into an existing bayonet with an already plated blade. Also, make certain the teeth are evenly spaced and cut on exactly the same angle. Finally, the cuts have rounded bottoms instead of the crisp angles you see on your Demag and Scott's KS98.

I saw your post on BCN but after I saw it here so I answered here. I would be very cautious of this particular bayonet before I paid for it.

Here's my S98/05 it is not in the best condition, but I like it anyway.
It has29 sawteeth, all with the same age and wear as the bayonet.

Does dis one look good Schupo?I can't make out the makermark,it is in a triangle,at the bottom,I can read Werken,it has some other markings, but really hard to read.

Scott, what is the insignia on the grip of your bayonet?

                          Kind regards,Jeremy
