I really like these with the etched blades. I think yours is an officers dagger because the one we have is not as detailed as yours. The acorns on the handle look different too. Maybe its from different makers.

What you have is a hirschfänger made by Eickhorn from 1935-41, it's for a senior forester, it's their 1059 pattern, this type does come with stag grips for lower grades("unteroffizier") pattern # 1212.
During the early manufacture of your particular pattern hirschfänger they were brass based and gilded, later on they used a lightweight base material and gilded that, often with the lightweight pieces the gilding will rub off and show the base material beneath.

There are many different hirschfängers out there not only for foresters but for hunters and the shooting fraternity. I hope you get to find many more as the variety is almost endless.
Here's a picture of the same pattern as yours but with the addition of a crown on the grip denoting a state forester.

What did you do to make yours so bright and gold???

Could the first one be cleaned and made to look that new?

The piece I show came like this, it has near full gilt and is the reason that it looks so new, I would suggest not to try cleaning yours, I believe that Susdsy amonia will clean the gilted area's but I have personally not tried it, you may want to get other opinions on this subject of cleaning.

Gary, I didn't realise there were any different handle adornments. I thought they were always acorns. There are a couple of places on my handle guilding that has been worn away, mainly on the small deer opposite the Eichhorn squirrel. All I need now is a scabbard to make it complete. Thanks

Is this the acorn for a forrest handle?
