S 98 nA with leather scabbard

Hi guys,

Here's a recent find that I'm adding to my collection. I'm quite pleased with the overall condition but in particular the scabbard as they seldom remain unscathed at this age in their lives.

5 pics to follow. First one is a little off, can't tell if it's my eyes and the focus or just glare. I'll replace it when I have a moment to retake the shot.

A very nice example of the private purchase S98. You are quite right that these long scabbards normally received rough treatment due to their excessive length. You got a good one.

How can one see this is a private purchase?Does this mean it wasn't used in the field?I've learned from your book that these S98 were sometimes seen as Ehrenwaffen for veterans,after WW1,were these maybe private purchase?

Yes, your S98 is also a private purchase bayonet like Stu's. These are sometimes called "walking out" or "dress" or "parade" bayonets. They were usually not worn in the field but were privately purchased by the soldier so they would have a nicer bayonet to wear off duty. S98 that were items of issue are typically finished bright by polishing while private purchase ones were very often plated. Issue bayonets are also typically marked with inspection and property markings while private purchased ones were not since they belonged to the soldier and not the Government. Some soldiers, and uniformed veterans, did continue to wear their old regulation S98 bayonets after 1918 as Ehrenwaffen.

I saw a few days ago,that these S98 are also been reproduced,it looked very convincing,but I lost the website,I will search for it again.I hope it won't be too difficult to spot these fakes,because I really like these S98.
