SS Marked Fighting Knife - Real or Fake

Hi guys, this showed up at my local antique store. I am extreamly scepticle. The knife appears as #19 in Hughes book on German Military Knives but the death head - well I just don't know as I do not collect 3rd Reich edged weapons. If you guy think this is legit PM me and I'l put you in touch with the store. Please note I have no relationship with the store other than I accaisionally buy stuff there.

    Regards,

    Greg

Note that the scabbard type is not in Hughes' book

There is no story with this, only that the consigner bought it at a US auction. As the asking price is about 1000,00 the shop owner was unwilling to buy it outright.

IMO, its hard to tell if this is period done and I dont see how it could be authenticated. It could be a period espirt de corps type of thing. Interesting in any case. If I bought something like this it would have to be a direct ss vet purchase.

It's certainly is cool, one will never know if it is original to the period. If he had a 90% mark down I might risk it.

As I noted in a previous thread, anytime I hear/see "SS" followed by anything, I get nervous.

If anything I've seen in the past ten years had a shot at being real, this would be it. (Note that I did NOT say I thought it was real, just that there was a chance.) I agree that it would be impossible to prove and you will spend the rest of your life trying to convince yourself and everyone else that it's a right piece.

IMO, not worth the time/money/effort, especially at that price.

Skip beat me to it, I was thinking the same thing My suggestions would be to leave this piece along unless it's a direct SS vet purchase or unless it's really bargain prices. It's a cool enough piece but you'll never be able to verify if the skull addition is period or not.

I would suggest you scrutinize anything that purports to be SS two or three times as much as anything other item, there's just too many altered pieces out there. Many done recently are getting good albeit not perfect.
