    Damascus Sword- A Good Read.

From GDC. Definitelty a good read. Read the arguments and form your own opinion.

I don't give a rat's a** about the saber and whether it's original or not, but the thread is very entertaining...

Like skip said, it certainly in entertaining. However, I thiknk there are some points to learn from. Im not that technical of a collector, and avoid damascus presentations for many reasons including how cost prohibitive they are, and how more and more reproductions are popping thier heads up. Tor the very advanced or spefic collector, WEEL WORTH the read. Guys in to damas bayos or daggers, can probably learn a few key points from the thread. If you can ignore some of the BIG egos and try to read through the lines, it ideed is an educational post....and still entertaining.

      Thats my retort.

The thread has been somewhat entertaining but I lose any interest in threads/topics that denegrate into bickering. I very much enjoy a good debate on differences of opinion & in this case there seems to be at least that. I think a lot can be gleaned from the observations made in such threads as many of us will never come close to the experience level of those involved. That said, as collectors I think we all need to ask a lot of questions of qualified collectors, read & reread all the references, expose yourself to as many legitimate items as possible & always keep an open mind.

Regarding the sword in question, Craig did indeed acquire it from the original Eban seller (as the thread would have you believe) but I was told he has since sold it, possibly at the MAX.

I cant post anything relating to Craig on the GDC otherwise I get banned for 30 days.My concern is he bought the sword form eBay...not a Big deal but he bought it from another Marine USMC antiques...who is Located in San Diego...and they must have run into each other at 1 time, both being marines and Military dealers...so why buy it off ebay or have to find it through eBay THEN he posts the Thread on the GDC with "anyone see this" Just smelled like a set up for some reason.

Im a San Diegan as well. I think he didn't officially buy it through eBay channels. I believe the deal was made outside of eBay. Not sure what he paid, and as stated the gent he bought it from has been around on eBay and I also believe he's a member here.

I totally agree in regards to a thread degrading into bickering. It so often does. I think we know that certain collectors are in the "club" and often greenlight something that is questionable merely because they or a friend is selling it. When we're talking big dollars, it is imparative to question the item if there are any concers about authenticity. We've seen games before and hate to see folks get burned by one of the "big guys".

I've always had good dealings with Craig and contrary to what some say, IMHO he is one of the good guys.

These things are well out of not only my price range, but my sphere of interest in collecting. Certainly toys of the advanced collector. That being said, it still makes a good read and is informative to the specific area.

I wonder how many of the people discussing this sword have actually handled it? I was with Fred Stephens when he retrieved the sword from Helmet Weitzies' back table at the MAX and thoroughly went over it. Many of the questionable points are very subtle and really require a hands on inspection to be clear. Enough said.
