    Opinions on this Sword

    Hi All,

I have this TR NCO sword I want to put on the estand. I believe this is for Police or Fire enlisted. Portapee came with sword and I have had it for many years. Some of the handle wire is missing, scabbard shows typical aging with chipping of the paint but blade is very nice. Would like some comments on the sword itself and if possible the market value of this item. You can PM with approx value. THANKS!

                  Dan,

Your sword is a standard Eickhorn #40. It is a traditional sword and could have been worn by about anyone who bought a sword. The Portepee is indeed Feuerwehr NCO and may or may not be original to the sword but that does not make the sword a FW sword. The condition is a problem as there is wire missing from the grip and the leather Fingerschlauf is broken and missing. I see these sell for anywhere from $150- $200 on ebay.

Agree with George. Keep in mind, you can replace the grip wire yourself if you want the saber to look a bit nicer. Its a relatively easy job that a novice can perform.

                      Schupo / Swordfish -

Much thanks for the comments. I will look into replacing the wire but what the heck is the leather Fingerschlauf? Might this be the leather tongue that protects the sword from the body when carried?

                      Thanks - Dan

                          Dan,

The Fingerschlauf is the little leather loop that was an extra option placed between the guard and the ferrule on the inside of the guard. You can see the remains of the leather loop above the langet on the guard and the ferrule. It was used to put the forefinger through to better control the sword. Unfortunately, it is broken and missing from your sword.
