ive noticed previously some variation in the tip shape of scabbards i have one or two that are just different enough for me to notice

other than the inner runners, 1 for early 2 in a later scabbard.....?? what else can determine its age?

You are a good study Mike. This discussion has come up before, that is why I did not say anything to encourage use of forum search tool.

I have previously done a side by side comparison before to prove the point, but can't find the link. Here's a more recent one:

After seeing the additional photos of the scabbard I feel a lot better about its originality. While Jeff makes an excellent point about the scabbard, I've seen a lot of early pieces in pointed scabbards so I don't know exactly at what point to use it as a tool.

picked up a late rzm m7/42 1940 and the scabbard tip is a really fine point, and sharper than the knife tip, hopefully will get pics up tomorrow

Larry - On 1936 and later transitionals you should not be seeing rounded points. Exceptions exist, but the one that started this is an early one. It's like an aluminum liner in and M42 helmet, didn't happen.

looks like a hj scabbard thread could be needed

i thought i had seen your knife before, did you buy it from past glories? i see they have listed a few more on there website.

edit - looking back at your first post now i see you credited the webby, did you buy it? its another maker i need to get hold of for want of winning the lottery

The leather is black like a post 35-37. Early was brown. Brown was phased out between 35 - 37 and black was introduced. This is a later scabbard on an early pre-RZM knife (1933-1934). This is all to the best of my knowledge and memory.

Thanks Paul that is also one of the subtle differences between the early and later scabards. People often say, "well, the kids could have switched scabbards". That's is possible of course. More likely is dealers switching, figuring collectors would not know the difference.
