    Unusual K98k Bayonets

I was going through a box I packed away, years ago, and found all my bayonets. I have three for which I am not familiar

    1. 38 dated on spine and maker marked MUNDLOS(Never heard of them)

    2. Maker marked ACS with scales (Coppel) and not dated and no military waffenamps. No proofs on scabbard. The only proof is eagle B on spine. Has brown 1937 dated frog with police knot.

    3. No maker and waffenamp marked WaA253 on button and top of pommel. Serrial numbered on pommel. No proofs on scabbard. Black frog 1941 dated with large letter K impressed.

I would appreciate any information on these bayonets.

    Thank you,
    Bob Hritz

So you "found" militaria that you forgot you had?

Yes, Nick, I have opened boxes that I packed away 30 years ago. I knew I had bayonets, but did not know where they were until yesterday.

        Hi Bob,

Mundlos was a major maker of the SG84/98 bayonet during the Third Reich era.

The E/B sounds like a police bayonet but beware of fakes.

What is the serial number on the last one and exactly where is it stamped? lengthwise, crosswise, etc.

        Regards, Leon

          Hello Leon,

I do not buy bayonets from dealers or collectors. Those I have are from my ads, in the 1970s.

Here is a photo of the serial number, on the pommel. I would like to know why such a strange placement of number.

            Hi Bob,

The Portugese contract bayonets were numbered to the matching rifle in that location but the one's I have seen have an "E" prefix. I think I have one similar to your example but I can't put my hands on it right now. I remember that it has a number in the same location but with no prefix. Maybe someone can help us both on that one.

            Regards, Leon

A beautiful bayonet with a near mint frog, but for what purpose was the serial number on the pommel?

Mundlos made the 84/98 during imperial times into WWII and is a common maker. The 2nd bayo sounds like a 2nd model 84/98 made during the imperial era,the crown over "B" being an inspectors marking.Your third bayonet is a portuguese contract bayonet made by Germany for Portugal. There were 2 different orders,or production runs, one in 1937 and one in 1939.From the quality of the bluing on the pommel,I would guess that this is one is from the 1939 production run.

                    Jim,

Thanks. I wonder how the Portugese bayo got beought back by a US vet, unless it never got shipped to Portugal.

The 2nd bayonet listed has an eagle B proof, on the spine, not a crown B.

Hello Bob, please could You send the serial number and letter of Mundlos 38 bayo, thanks, the ACS is probably a police contract with Eagle/B proof, the latest one looks like Portuguese M37 contract, but unfortunally he has not the typical prefix number, certainly the piece was reblued while the lock nut has other color as the pommel area. It could be that the piece remained from the first contract and was used by Wehrmacht? Or the previous owner has not got it in 1945? best regards,Andy

                        Bob,
the Eagle/B mark on the Bayonet is, as the others have allready described, indeed a Polizei marked bajonet.

Check my website, section "/equipment/acceptance stamps for a list of the Polizei proof marks.

If you ever decide to sell the Polizei bajonet I would be interested. Been looking for one for some time now
