    WW I Re-Work K-98 Bayonet - 2 Makers Marks

Here is a bayonet that appears to have been re-worked at some point. The first makers stamp on the blade is F. Herder A. Sn Solingen and the secnod on the other side is Walter & Co. Muehlhausen in Thueringen. The spine is stamped with a crown topped W and 16 below. Just under that closest to the scross guard is what looks like a crown topped G or E.

On the opposite side of the push button release is another stamp which looks likie the crown topped L which would mean Bavaria.

It seems this bayonet does not what it wants to be. The push button is not sloted, but the grip rivets are.

Any clues or help on this one?

    Thanks,

    Brad

your bayonet is ww1 period German (Prussian) bayonet SG 84/98 n/A 2 modell - W under crown means kaiser Wilhelm and 16 below year 1916. G/E and L under crown are control stamps.
before end of ww1 were made changes in SG 84/98 bayonets - older typ SG 84/98 a/A (alter Art) was replaced by SG 84/98 n/A (neuer Art). There are some diferencies between them in grip and scabard.
The first marker probably made bayonet and another one made changes to n/A bayonet

I hope you can understand.....sorry for my english

Thanks for the info. So, if I understand this correctly. This bayonet is WW I and not a re-work in the Weimar period or WW II?

I have a Imperial era Gardi unit marked combat sword with dual maker marks. This means one of them supplied the blade. The other maker finished making the sword.

The same is true of WW1 era 84/98's.Fredereick Herder used blades manufactured by other companies, usually Odeon Werke, but also others as this one shows.

I should mention on the sword blade the maker marks are Erfurt and PD Luneschloss.
