    Eickhorn bajonets

    Hello !

    I've been wondering about one thing. How come, that almost every german K98 bajonet I see on the auction sites, and here on the forum, are marked with sgx, jwh, Föller or something else... Why not Carl Eickhorn ? I haven't seen any Eickhorn bajos for a long time now, and was wondering about if they're too common, and worthless, or just "rare" ?

    So, is it just me that haven't seen a Eickhorn bajo for a long time ?

    Does any one else have some Eickhorn bajos ?

    I have a matching numbers Eickhorn bajo from 1938 marked: 823 S and probably a RBN number on the leather strap...

    Hello Mads,
    Eickhorn was one of the larger manufacturers and certainly more often seen than sgx (only partial year 1944/45 or jwh (French Chatterault (sp?)). Most of the wartime Eickhorns are coded "cof". Not sure why you are seeing less Eickhorns than others. I honestly hadn't noticed this trend.

      Thank you for replying !

      cof would be the reason then... I just wondered why there wasn't any bajonets with the Carl Eickhorn name ?

      Why would they "cut away" the Carl Eickhorn stamp, and apply the cof ?

        Beginning in 1939, the Germans used a code system to hide the identity of manufacturers from the Allies. The three letter code assigned to Eickhorn was "cof".
        Learning about these bayonets, best known as the SG84/98III can be a fascinating aspect of militaria collecting and I would highly recommend stocking your library with a few good reference books. These two would be great starters;

        1) Reichswehr and Wehrmacht Bayonets 1920-1945 by Mike Welser

        2) Seitengewehr: History of the German Bayonet 1919-1945 by George T. Wheeler

        Hope this helps...
