    Strange K98 bayonet with sawback

Found this one while sorting through estate, has S/242 adjacent to crossguard on blade with #6559a on opposite site, appears to be normal WWII K98 but as the "butcher blade sawback" exactly like the enlisted red cross hewer. Did they have sawbacks in WWII, doesnt appear to be converted blade, extra photos on request.

        Well

From what I have heard such alterations would not have been allowed during the war. I am guessing the sawback has been added at a later stage after the war.

          Bayonet

Thats what I thought as well but it is very nicely done and exactly as sharp and effective as the back of the Red Cross Hewer,

            Hmm

Well I would be sceptical about it also because of the quality of the sawback. If you examine it closely, the spacing between the points is not uniform and the angle seems to be varied as well. Either way, an interesting piece to any collection.

It sure looks like an individually made piece. Very unique!

Its a certainly a postwar sawback, the tooths of a functionaly saw could not go to only one side. and they are very shallow, the scabbard is from older Sg84/98nA of WW1, could You send details of the date on spine of blade near crossguard? The piece was accepted probably with WaA253 on pommel? best regards,Andy
