    K98 bayonet

    Hi guys,
I think this is a weird k98 bayonet. There aren't any markings on the bayonet that could suggest post war re-issue, but the scabbard has been painted (from what I see of this photo's). Could this have been period done? The bayonet is a matching ASW from 1940, with nummer 2660 (y). The frog is unit marked (A. Gr. 15?).

    Thanks in advance,
    Edgar

There is a very good chance the scabbard was painted during the NS Zeit. It isn't that uncommon to see painted scabbards, especially on the KM marked pieces. I have one that is in a web frog and is Feld Grau painted that came directly from a vet - via Sicily.

        Hi dag,

Thanks for your good and fast reply. This really helps! Can you post a picture of your k98 bayonet?
        Greetings Edgar

Black paint could be a preservation of the finish, on ball finial could be WaA883 probably hatd to see. the bayonet is a blanko one? best regards,Andy

                Andy,
I'm not certain if you are speaking about my bayonet or Luftwaffe44's bayonet. My Ferlach is matching.

Were K98 bayonet scabbards ever factory painted black? I picked up a 1941 dated Clu marked bayonet and scabbard (matching numbers) and the scabbard is painted black...and appears to be period/factory done.

                    Thanks in advance!

It could be done in Field by soldier, but normally it should have it blueing under the paint. best regards,Andy
                      Otherwise it was done postwar.
