    Thanks for the aditional photos. It appears that your guy had to do a little repair work. Notice that the top connector on the cloverleaf is beveled and the bottom one isn't. Since it appears to be a Type II chain, the beveled connector is correct. With only the view from the reverse it looked like it might be a combination of parts from Type I & Type II chains. It's not overly unusual for these links to be repaired if it was worn often. He must have worn it often since it appears that about half the links have been replaced. Still, it looks like a nice original piece.

      There is no way really of knowing if the repairs are period I believe. Does the scabbard look like it was repainted? Any use that would generate the need for new links would likely cause a lot of wear to the scabbard paint. This one has a nice finish. Great looking blade.
