Fair Price To Offer On This Luft 2nd Mini Dagger

    Hi Everyone,

What is a fair price to offer on a nice boxed mini Alcoso Luft 2nd model dagger? It has a dedication on the scabbard. The box shows it's age with a few tears. The dagger is mint and roughly 10" long. I do not have any pictures at this point. A very nice dealer at a local gun show has it. I have purchased from him in the past.

    Thanks,
    Joe

Assuming the condition of the dagger is excellent and the box is at least very good, I would estimate somewhere between $800 to $900. If it also has a miniature portepee, I'd add another $150. This might be a little conservative if the dagger is truly mint.

The portapee's are a bitch, and its boxed? I would say the above # is low from my experience. But if you can get it for that I would.

So as a new visitor and collector, is this an authentic dagger to purchase

          Hi Terry...welcome aboard!

Hard to tell without photo's on a piece like this. There are a number of currently-made miniatures out there - most notably some very high quality ones coming from just down the road in Richmond, Texas. They are being sold as reproductions and priced quite fairly for what they are. The problem arises when someone takes a new piece and tries to pass it off as a pre-May 1945 example.

I have no reason to think that's what's happening here, but for what the original miniatures are bringing these days on the collector market, I would encourage any prospective purchaser to get some other opinions. My main concern with the dagger Joe is inquiring about is the inscription on the scabbard. That's where photo's might help

            Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the comments. I have some pictures now. The dagger is really mint. The pictures do not do it justice.

            Thanks,
            Joe

                        Hi Skip,

No, not yet. I have to give him a call tomorrow. Even with pictures, do you think $900.00 is a fair offer?

IMO that is at the high end of the price range. I think it's a fair price if you're planning to keep the dagger for a while, but it's not a bargain.

If you can't get him to give you a price you might strt off with an offer of, say, $750 - $800 and see what happens. You can always bump your offer up if it's something you really want.

                          Good luck...keep us posted,

My experience with selling minis is this: they are slow movers. In order to sell one, you usually have to price-motivate unless you get lucky. That said, if this piece had the entire box present, and not just the insert, I would say the value would be considerably higher than $900. I just sold a boxed example of the more common SMF for $1600 - mint condition with original box in mint condition. The Alcoso is rarer than the SMF, and with a perfect box, I'd say $1450 to $1750 would not be an unreasonable value for one with an original box (though the actual sales price would of course vary based upon who is selling it, where it is selling, etc). But given the condition of your piece, I'd say that the initial pre-photo estimates above turned out to be right on the money.
