      This knot is believed to be an early SS sword knot, prior to the silver bullion knot with runes on the stem.

        Could be ? IMO, more than likely an Imperial sword knot from Prussia.

          Billy is partially right, I believe the early SS Officer Knot he is referring to looked like this except the cat's anus at bottom of ball was black velvet. So I would say this one not being black velvet, Fletch is probably right. Could also be an army variant, as I have had Third Reich swords right out of the would work with this style knot.

                  Here's an example of this knot on a Polizei NCO degen, though I don't think it has been on there since 1945! It looks to be loosely-woven black fabric of some sort.

                    I agree. This style is a very common and they continued to be worn after WWI too.
