    HJ knife...

I bought, by MY error of judgement, a repro HJ knife off eBay - typical 60's production in Germany - Amde in Germany marked on the leather scabbard strap, Othello, Solingen, Germany on the ricasso, and G.C.CO 420 on the reverse ricasso. POanel inlay was only a red and white diamond.

I got ripped, pure and simple, as it was aged to try to look right. It was my error though for not being more cautious.

So, what could I re-list this on eBay at? I mean a sensible price so as I am not going to rip anybody off. I know I can not recoup the $100 I spent on it.

The seller is being an absolute horse's behind about it too, claiming she had it appraised by a "German specialist" who "verified" it as an HJ knife, so it is therefore not her fault. I feel a VERY big red NEGATIVE feedback brewing in my guts against her! If she had offered some form of recompense, fine. But to blatantly deny any responsibility on her listing is bad practice.

The question is not so much how much should you list the knife for, but how you will present it. If you show photos of the "Germany" marking(s) and other red flags, offering it as a reproduction, the market will determine the value. I would start it at around $25.00 and just see what happens. You might also consider offering it in the Bazaar section of the e-Stand here on the Forum.

Another good idea would be to keep it in a drawer or an a shelf to remind yourself what a b**ch this hobby can be. I wish the total cost of my mistakes was only a hundred bucks - I have a drawer ful of them!

    Sorry about the bad luck,

You might want to hang onto it for another reason. That is some of the early German reproduction pieces are becoming collectable in their own right. The first SS dagger I ever bought turned out to be a German post ware reproduction complete with plated brass fittings and an Alcoso marked blade (they never made SS daggers during the 3rd Reich). I bought it at a gun show when I didn't know any better and sold it as a repro on ebay several years later for a little more than I paid for it.
