    Solingen visit

    Gents,

Any serious blade collector who has not visited Solingen is missing out on a tremendous opportunity to experience the 'soul' of this hobby. The town of Grafrath is a charming little 'old town' with a number of quaint hotels located within walking distance of the Klingenmuseum. I highly recommend Tom Johnson's Volume VIII as it will provide an accurate tourist guide of Solingen today. Anyway, enough, here are the pictures.....

Michael this is very very impressive, I'm glad they display the TR daggers and swords. Can't wait to see more from your trip. Just thinking about Solingen, I went to a Braae on saturday and saw a familiar looking pair of dancing guys on the Carving knife, Nice to see Henckels still producing Knifes today in Soligen! I was shocked! No one could understand why I kept on admiring the the carving knife as I stood there thinking of its grandparents!

                    Mike,

Thanks for sharing. Did the museum still have the SS Officer sword? I remember it being one of the nicest ones that either Tom Johnson or I had ever seen

Glad you're back from the sandbox!

I actually found the 3rd Reich section (or corner of that room) rather disappointing on my visit in 2002. The pieces from other important eras are much better represented and displayed. The ladies that worked there weren't much help on locating some of surviving edged weapons manufacturers.

                        Glad I went though.

                          Visit

                          Jeff,

Tom Johnson's volume VIII provides the addresses for most of the current/former blade makers in Solingen. A very helpful guide.

Considering for many years that the Klingenmuseum had no Third Reich weapons on display, the current selection is certainly a significant improvement. I think we all have to understand that the Third Reich period is still a very sensitive subject today in Germany. Hence, the lack of Third Reich material in most German museums.
