    Custom Etch on Dress Bayonet

    Hi all!

Opinions most welcome please...does the 2/826 designation on this Etch refer to a Heer or Luftwaffe unit?.The lightening Bolt represent an Air to ground unit or possible Panzer?.....

Interesting and unique etch. What's up with the ghost image next to the left bookend?

Besides the image Billy mentioned how about the way the border wanders in the lower left and upper right of the panel?

I have given this etch more than one look over the past couple of years, and constantly come up with issues (borders, lack of quality on the bookends, the one-off nature) that have kept me from buying this.

And, I am still of the opinion that this is not for me.

+1 with John Z. Cashi has offered hundreds of awesome etched bayonets threw the last couple years. I know John and I have relieved him of many of these. Point is, in a collection of this size, you will ALWAYS find a couple "questionable" pieces.

With that said, with this collection being picked over a multitude of times threw the years, do you really think there is a chance you are gonna find a gem? With your example that you asked about, just listen to the members that took the time to respond. All these guys know there stuff here.

Save your money. Be safe out there!! Best wishes,

                Mat J

Yes, I would have concern over the phantom template mark as well as the other concerns raised by our learned brothers here. An interesting bayonet to be sure but on that might cause you to lose sleep over. I'd leave it alone.

I took a quick look - and tonight would not be losing any sleep. FP

                      Research Research Research

I am not an expert on dress bayonets or etching. But, before I dismissed this I would research the unit. Was it in De Panne (La Panne as the French called it) in March 1941? De Panne was a major German base during their attempt to reduce the Dunkirk pocket. The fact that the etch uses the French name for the town might be a clue as to the origin of the etching.

La Panne is on the coast NE of Dunkirk. And if maps from May 30-31 1940 are correct it was inside the outer defense perimeter. FP

Thank you all for your comments.

I had wondered for some time why such an unusual etch had remained unsold...I had my doubts.

Cash has sold some great Bayonets over time and is good to deal with.

Yes. And so, the date of March 1941 doesn't seem to make sense because the invasion of Belgium had not even begun yet.

I would agree with the thoughts that this etch is somewhat uncommon and very interesting, the overwhelming concern should be whether the etch itself was applied pre-1945 or postwar. Such a specific piece would have been a private purchase item at extra cost to the buyer so the ghost template would make this one not for my collection.

The pictures in Cash's link are not detailed enough to scrutinize the grip plates and rivets, maybe better pics would show something amiss.

Are we even sure the hilt is a Klaas product?
