    Hi Tornfute,

I thought that the 23 and 20 Kasten were the same size; did you just mean the screw locations differed?

    TIA

I finally managed to see a decent description of the Kasten.Pz.nr. 23, indeed it has two toggle switches. The top switch is to switch between the different types of Funksprechers (they have different output impedences); on the 23a this switch has moved to the interior of the box. Also noticable is that the 23 did not have the half-round switch protectors found on the other boxes. All this is consistant with the photographs taken inside the Saumur Luchs.

I managed to get some better pictures of the 23a and 4a kasten. The 4a is interesting to me at least, as I have just noticed that it appears to be recessed at the top rear, something which I have never seen before.

Although not perfect, I also managed to get a couple of shots of the ????????? mounted directly on the inside of where the armoured aerial pot is.

Ditto of the gyrocompass, although I could not quite reach to get a head on shot.

Lastly, does anybody know what the silver cylinder is?

          Cheers,

          Ian

            Gyrocompass

Before you all start pointing it out, I have since learnt what the item is in photos 1 and 7. Does anybody have basic dimensions for it please?

I've also cleaned my camera lens of that intrusive smear!!

              Antenna coil

              Having looked again at the photos, I am convinced that the bottom photo shows the antenna coil. The reddish brown body colour shown in this thread;

              http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=410178

gave me a clue, but when I zoomed in on the photo, I could just see a screw head on the circumference, just below the front face of the coil, which clinched it for me. What the outer coil is though, is another matter.

One thing going against that theory is that it would be impossible to operate the coil. The coil had a switch with three positions which would have to be selected depending on the frequency used. You might be right that there was a pertinax tube inside the spring to insulate the antenna conduit. I still think the coil would have been mounted just outside the spring and connected to the central antenna connection visible in the middle of the porcelain insulator.

Unless.... the top insulator is able to hinge open, and looking the two photographs it looks like it is indeed mounted on a hinge. It might just be that the central antenne connection in the insulator is connected via a piece of flexible braiding the the antenna coil (which might just be visible on the bottom photograph). So to operate the coil you would have to "open" the top insulator. A totally crazy design, just something the Germans would do.....

                regards,

                Funksammler

I managed to get a shot of the Saumur Luchs yesterday, and lo and behold, there is exactly that; a short stub of cable, (impossible to see if it is braided or not), still attached to the centre of the insulator. The hinge is also seen in better detail.

And the reason why I was having difficulty posting pictures before was their size! Happy days.

                    Hello Ian,
I think that here will be a better place to answer your and Funksammler question (answered on missing-lynx). As I said it is a device can automatically or manually start fire protection system in the engine compartment of the vehicle. Nice description of this is in the book: Tiger! The Tiger Tank: A British View, by David Fletcher, below I present two diagrams shown in this book:

I also see that you have a beautiful interior pictures Luchs, is there a chance they somehow see them?
                    Regards

                      Hi Piotr,

thanks for the information and drawing/photo Do you know if the size of the extinguisher was the same as a standard extinguisher?

I have over 1400 photos of the Lynx interior, the vast majority of which were taken at Saumur either last November, or over the last couple of days, and at Bovington a week ago, when I was given limited access. As you probably know, the Saumur Lynx had an accident last year and is slowly being put together again.

Although the Bovington tank is substantially complete and original inside, (no radios, optics or munitions), because of the compact size, it is actually much more difficult to take decent pictures in comparison to the Saumur vehicle, which is more of a walkaround scenario, at least while it is in the workshop! See the attached photo of its current condition.

Obviously I cannot post all my photos here, (slightly off the communications topic), but if you email me at iandotaldermanatoutlookdotcon detailing any specific requirements we can take it from there.

                      Regards,

                      Ian

PS Is there any other information about the automatic fire extinguisher in the Tiger book?

I still can't decide whether to invest in that book!
