Val it does not matter which way round the dial is configured as the pulse generator is geared to the dial so regardless of the dial orientation when you dial one only a single pulse is sent.

But it does matter, because if operator uses inner numbering (that is backwards), then when dialing by that designation 9, phone makes 1 pulse.

But my question wasn't technical, it's more like operational question - what for the germans used that second numbering/lettering scheme, especially considering, that numbers are backwards. Sure there must be some kind of operational manual for explaining that.

Oslo number system

Yes, there is a difference.
The two phones that are shown in the pictures have been used in Norway.
The city of Oslo has a different number system in pulses.
Only Oslo and New Zealand that has this system.
It was so because of problem with the delivery of the first automatic telephone exchange in 1918. After that it was difficult to change the system since all the phones had such a numbering system.
The German phones used in the Oslo therefore had to have both numbers on the dial systems.

Val you are quite right I was talking complete rubbish - which ever way the numbering goes the first position will produce one pulse! I can only surmise that the dialler which is backwards is from some other unit or had the numbers applied incorrectly. Perhaps its some hybrid telephone version of the Enigma???
