Field Telephones on the Eastern Front

    Hi,

Has anyone ever seen photos of a field telephone (Feldfernsprecher 33) with the bakelite case painted in white for use on the Eastern Front?

    cheers

I haven't do you have a photo of one to show? I have a 98k bayonet that the scabbard is painted that way. I think they whitewashed a lot of stuff on the russian front, as it could be removed later when they went back to france. The bayonet was painted with an almost silvery white paint, as opposed to a whitewashed color. I would think anything is possible , but of thousands and thousands of russian front photos i have looked at, I have never noticed one field radio painted white , or winter camo. Hopefully the photo freaks will have one to share if there is any to be seen. Thats a good question.

I only once saw this on auction, and purpose is special as we can see.

On many eastern winter photos I have seen there is standard telephone color.

I don't think whitewash sticks to the smooth bakelite surface of the field telephone, so they should have used white paint. Apart from availability to the frontline troops, it would have been a problem cleaning off once the snow disappeared. Besides, most field telephones would be placed in dugouts where snow camouflage is not quite necessery. There was a white cover available for the field telephone, this was of most use when the telephone was being carried over the snowsuit. Again the lack of period photographs make it difficult to verify if these were in widespread use.

        regards,
