Higher voltage batteries can be used, but only with a correctly dimensioned series resistor (that takes a 1 V voltage drop and brings the voltage at the terminals back to 2 V).
From a safety point of view is is advisable to make sure your power supplies are properly earthed (I assume there will be clear manufacturer's instructions to do so). I will have to check the Torn.E.b schematic ibut I suspect that the minus terminal of the power supply is already connected to the housing, so extra earthing of the receiver is probably not necessary from a safety point of view.
