Feldfernsprecher 33 Question

I have a set of Feldfernsprecher 33's. I have two questions:

1) When hooking up a battery, which lead is connected to the + side of the battery, and which is connected to the - side? The leads in the battery compartment aren't marked.

2) How are the phones connected? There is lead marked La and one marked Lb. I presume the La on one phone is connected to the La on the other phone, and the same with the Lb.

FF 33 Questions

I've look for a FF 33 manual online, but there's nothing helpful (in English anyway). Here are some more questions if anyone can answer them:

1) I have two phones that look the same, but there are subtle differences. I.e., one of the handsets has 5 prongs and one only 4. Are these phones supposed to be compatible with each other?

2) Does the La on one phone connect to the La on the other? Same for the Lb connectors?

3) Does it matter which terminals the (+) and (-) on the batteries go to? There are no markings in the battery box.

4) Both phones will ring if I turn the cranks on either of them. If I speak on the 5-prong handset (set A), I can hear myself on set A, but not the 4-prong handset (set B). If I speak on set B, I can hear myself on set A, but not on set B. Any idea why?

5) What are the jack holes in front for?

6) What are the jack holes on the side for?

7) What is the white button on top for?

I don't know alot about phones but the battery terminals are not important for pos or neg. Either post will work. You can use regular speaker wire to connect the phones together. Again, it doesn't matter which way they are hooked up. To power the phone up you can get a D cell battery holder at Radio shack for about $1.50. Pop a battery in then connect the leads to the posts. The 2 phones should work then.

the white button on top if depressed will allow that phone to ring while you crank the handle. As long as it hooked up to another phone.

The jack holes are for connecting muliple phones or to a switch board.

As for the 4 and 5 post plug on the phone I can't help you with. All mine are 5 post.

1) The plugs uses only 4 prongs, the outer two is for the transmitter circuit.
The center plug is not used, and the 2 last is for the receiver.
Plugs made during war was saving materials, and did not have the center plug.

2) La/Lb is just names as ring and tip. E is earth/ground if they used ground return, and single line. It does not matter if you reverse the polarity.

3) Battery polarity is reveresible on carbon granulate transmitters. The right voltage for theese is 1.5V! And the orginal transmitter should be marked with a green X. Newer (modern replacement) transmitters may be depending on higher voltage and polarity.

4) a)Only the phone in the other end of the line should ring when you cranks one. (pushing test knob (question no 7) your own should ring too if line is not broken)
b) You may not hear anything in handset B.
*try to change the handsets. If the same still is dead, the error is in the handset - cord- plug assembly. (try to change the receiver element)
*If the handset B works on the other phone, the error is in the dead phone.

5) The 2 jack holes in front (same side as the lock of the cover) are for quick connections to other phones or other equipment. (The size is quit near a std. microphone jack plug)

6) What are the jack holes on the side for? It should not be a jack here, but a hole for mounting the crank, and som mountings for the carrying strap.

Theese telephones can be connected to moast american field telephones and works well. I have never seen an English manual or TM for the FF33, but EE8 documentation should be good enough.

Spares could be difficult, but many telephones from Italy and Germany has used transmitters and receicers who fits, The impedance may not match completely, but you should be able to maintain good speach over a few miles.

I have a manual but I am afraid it is in norwegian. It looks like a translation of a WW2 german one.
