    Panzerkasten20

    Hello,

New item in my collection. The standard intercom box for Panther/Tiger.
Not a radio per se, but an addition to the 10WSc/UKWEe.
This one worked after replacing the RV12P2000.

      Hello,

Trough fellow collectors mostly and Ebay of course.
Some of these show up from time to time.

It is funny to talk trough these devices, with the faint whizzz of the transformer or vibrator in the background.

      Cheers,
      Pascal

There is a red stripe under the designation. Based on the Trenkle book, these versions of the Pz. Kasten 20 have a manufacturer's modification. Alan, do you know anything about this?

            Thank you,

            Yuri

Dont know this mode but looks like it may have to do with wirring of the input output terminals. Note red line at the terminals.

These intercom boxes were produced in 2 versions. The first version made the radio operator the gatekeeper for the commander to use the transmitter. The radio operator could transmit through the transmitter with his microphone switch in the "off" position, but the commander could only transmit if the radio operator pressed his microphone switch.

This was remedied in the second version of this box, that was produced sometime in 1943. The modification allowed the commander to transmit independently of the radio operator's actions. This box was marked with a red stripe under the name plate and with another red stripe under the turret connection terminals.

Would that be just the audio only? The radio operator would still have to listen in to switch the switch on a 10ws between receive and transmit.

No, that would be to transmit. Since the radio operator could keep the 10W.S.c in transmit mode at all times anyway. The "Receive" feature on the 10W.S.c was a power-savings feature. It allowed the transmitter to keep the filament hot from just the battery, without starting the umformer to supply the anode voltage/current - this made the transmitter ready to transmit immediately without needing to warm up the tubes inside first.

Heres an english translation of the Tigerfibel. I will post the pagies of how the radio and intercom operated and how to use it. Everything is very basic and straight forward. The comander can be switched out of the intercom system so he can broadcast and recieve but the radio operator must still turn the recieve / transmit switch on the 10wsc and the radio operator is still connected to the transmitter and reciever. The commander would have to come down to the radio operators position for total privacy. Also note that only the commander, radio operator, driver and gunner were connected to the intercom system. To me this seems like a major oversight but from the books I have read the loader watch for hand signals from the gunner for what type of ammo AP, HP. This still does not seem very good. There are headphone only jacks that could be added to the intercom system which may have been added for the loader.

                      Regards
                      Alan
