    What is purpose canvas strips on German M43 cap?

    To secure the side flaps under the chin, and offer greater protection against the cold, much like a balaklava; although rarely seen worn in this manner.

            Many times the cap was left buttoned over the visor and the flaps simply pulled down over the ears. When the buttons were undone the effect was more like a hood.
