Can someone ID this cap

This cap just showed up locally. I'm interested in it but I have never seen one like this yet. As all things in this area it has a back story that pertains to South Africa, (unsure). Also missing cockade. To me it just doesn't look right. I just need to know if it's a real cap and who/where and when they were worn if possible. Thanks in advance to those that respond!

Its intended to be a DAK officers M40 field cap. Its a repro.

Now that we have that info... Does anyone happen to know a window of years this reproduction most likely was produced? The maker mark reads....

I would guess 20 years or more ago because this is a poor reproduction that would fool no one who had the benefit of the internet and the many excellent reference books from recent decades.

Thanks guys. I spent some time in the forum and was able to find reasons it's bad. I can explain to my friend and maybe let him down easy.
