    Steamy SS visor

Here is the SS visor I recently got in auction and after I steamed it back into shape.

It didn't go quite as planned and I'm a bit upset with myself but more on that later.

The eagle was a POS repro which I kind of expected.

I dunno, you’re being a bit of a perfectionist, I think it looks dreamy due to your steamy

Looks great, vastly improved. Steam can be very dangerous around old dry leather so caution has to be used when near sweatbands.... as i learned the hardway a couple of times.

It looks very good as a result of the steam treatment. Nice skull!

Ah … the Sol visor, looks more nice …. will be even more nice I am sure, well done. Did you clean it also, now piping looks nice and bright as it should? Nice wide top and a good job on the inner band, thought that could cause a problem if it would have been torn due to the pressure the visor seems to have had.

Bingo! that's why I was a bit upset with myself.

As you rightly say, steam and old leather don't mix well so I always lift up the sweatband first and cover it with a T-shirt. The SB in this cap was so crumbly however that I couldn't avoid bits of it falling off. It then split on the edge in one spot when I folded it back down.

I always way up the risk versus reward before attempting a steam and I'm sure it was worth it in this case because the pasteboard was badly twisted and bent from poor storage.

But it's still very disappointing to damage the leather.

It is hard to accept responsibility for being the guy that screws up something that was basically fine and hanging tough all those years.... until you got your hands on it. Nevertheless, I have found myself to be the guilty culprit on more than one occasion and it always leaves me very po’d.

When fixing dents in the fender - why not replace the headliner while you're at it?

You're a whiz with needle and thread . . . and at this stage, what would be the difference in restoring the sweatband as well?
